Mari Luomi (PhD)

Mari Luomi, Team Leader and Senior Writer with Earth Negotiations Bulletin, is a policy-oriented social scientist with decade and half experience with think tanks, academia, and consulting. A Finnish national based in the United Arab Emirates, she specialises in the international relations of climate change and energy transitions, and climate, energy, and sustainable development policy in the Gulf.
Dr. Luomi has been part of the ENB team and has contributed to the SDG Knowledge Hub since 2013. In addition to regularly covering UNFCCC meetings, she has reported on processes relating to environmental finance, desertification, conservation, cities, deep seabed mining, earth observations, and climate science.
Dr. Luomi holds a Ph.D in Middle East Politics from Durham University, UK, and a Master of Science in International Politics from the University of Helsinki, Finland. She has worked for leading sustainable development and foreign policy research institutions, including the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Georgetown University and Finnish Institute of International Affairs, among others. From 2015 to 2020, she established and led a research programme on Energy, Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the Emirates Diplomatic Academy, publishing pioneering work on the global environmental governance-foreign policy interface and building related capacity of Emirati diplomats and foreign policy professionals.
